From the first years of cultivation until today, agriculture has changed dramatically.
The development of technology and the use of machinery have played a crucial role in its mechanization leading to depletion of natural resources, increased production costs and negative effects of inputs (fertilizers, pesticides) on the environment and human health.
Changes in world trade, environmental concerns and consumer preference for safer and higher quality products lead to the need for changes in production and the assimilation of new methods of agricultural applications.

Precision Farming is a new method of agricultural application that aims to increase production and improve quality, as well as reduce the negative impact on the environment and the final consumer, making the whole process more sustainable. Uses information clearly defined in terms of space and time, in order to maximize the efficiency of the inputs and minimize their environmental impact.
It allows the modern cultivator to manage his field at points of a larger scale than that of the plot. It is based on technologies that accurately record the existing condition of the plot, then manage the data and finally apply the inputs covering the spatial and temporal needs of each point of the plot depending on its differentiation. Due to the above characteristics, the European Union has adopted stricter provisions, making the implementation of precision agriculture an imperative.

Some of the advantages of Precision Agriculture over conventional farming are:

  • Management of the plot in points of larger scale based on differentiation and not uniform:
    These technologies provide high-resolution data, ie information on the variability and needs of the field at each point, so that the implementation of inputs is more accurate and more efficient.
  • Reduction of crop inputs:
    Here the appropriate input (water, pesticides, etc.) is applied in the appropriate doses depending on the time, thus reducing the percentage of inputs as well as the cost of production.
  • Increasing production and improving the quality of products produced:
    The definition of the plot in uniform zones according to their scale and needs and respectively the correct application of the inputs spatially and temporally, lead to the development of productivity in proportion to the quality of the products.
  • Environmental Protection:

The relationship between Precision Agriculture and the environment is straightforward and timeless. Proper management and implementation of inputs minimizes the harmful effects of agriculture on the environment and consequently on human health.

According to the rural development program 2014-2020 & based on the new improvement measures we present technological innovations in crop production, contributing to the improvement of economic efficiency and the modernization of agricultural holdings. Therefore, and according to the tables of the call for improvement plans, we quote in detail the investments that are characterized as innovative in crop production based on Article 4.1:

🔰Variable dose sprayers

Variable dose sprayers can be large crops (tissue) or orchards according to the type of crop and consist of:

↪️A microcontroller that receives information and adjusts the pesticide doses accordingly
↪️Sensors that directly detect culture needs for spray doses
↪️Field microcomputer for calculating doses to be applied to the specific needs of the plot (sensors or information based on prescribed maps)
↪️Variable flow nozzles or electronically controlled spray volume change systems
↪️GPS unit

🔰Orchard sprayers with hair detection systems 

These sprayers have sensors (usually ultrasonic or laser) which scan the environment to the right & left of the sprayer and detect where there are trees.
In the intermediate gaps a micro-controller gives an order to stop the spraying.
In this way they achieve product f / p and reduce the pollution of the environment.
On some machines there is the possibility for partial control of the nozzles and interruption of a part by the cloud (eg if they encounter a short tree)

🔰Tree crown detection set 

This set is installed in conventional nebulizers and allows them to stop spraying when no tree canopy is detected. Consisting of:

↪️Ultrasound or laser sensor
↪️Systems adapted to the sprayer circuit for flow control
↪️Microcontroller
